Last night's bedtime story was Holes and Peeks by Ann Jonas. I was really tired and was glad that it was one of those easy stories. It's a good book now that my child is learning to read. The easy words and repetitive style of the author makes word recognition a breeze.
Holes and Peeks, is about a little child's fear of big or deep holes such as the toilet bowls and the hole in his socks. But peeks are small holes which he has fun with. He overcomes his fears of holes by making them into peeks. For example, placing a kid toilet seat onto the toilet bowl makes the hole into a peek.
While there is not much of a storyline to this story, the kids enjoyed the book all the same. Here's what I did to make this easy read a fun one as well - and not too taxing for an already tired mummy!
- Look at the illustration and spot the peek or hole
- Ask why the child is afraid of holes but was unafraid of peeks
- Ask if there were any types of holes they were afraid of and what made them afraid of it
- Ask if there was any way to lessen their fears of the above and if there was good in being afraid at times. (For example, one of the answer were manholes. I suppose they shouldn't be afraid of it but it was good that they knew it was dangerous and deep. And therefore to avoid!)
- And we spotted different types of holes around the house the next day. Eg. Keyholes, socket holes etc. Fun and easy!
